On 28th October 2011, the Italian National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN) has presented the Italian edition of the multilingual Glossary on Migration and Asylum at LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome. This tool, which was published in English language in Brussels in 2010, has been elaborated by the EMN within the context of the Glossary and Thesaurus Working Group that, since several years, has been operating at the European Commission with the involvement of all Member States. The Glossary is intended to serve as a useful reference for policy makers and practitioners in the field of migration and asylum, thanks to the systematic presentation of the use and common interpretation of the proposed terms that allows to adequately compare national contexts and experiences. The Italian edition of the EMN multilingual Glossary on Migration and Asylum contains new terms as well as specific notes appositely edited for national readers.
With this presentation, the Italian National Contact Point of the EMN has completed the cycle of dissemination conferences started in June, when the volume was formally presented, addressed to academics, social workers, law experts and consular representatives with a specific interest in asylum and migration. After an introduction by Sebastiano Maffettone, Director of the Department of Political Sciences as well as of the Centre for Ethics and Global Politics at LUISS University, and Raffaele De Mucci, Director of LUISS Study Centre on Political and Social Analysis (LAPS), Prefect Angelo Malandrino conveyed the official greetings from the Ministry of Interior. A technical introduction to the IT Glossary edition was provided by Antonio Ricci, member of the Italian NCP, and by two experts of the scientific committee who collaborated to the elaboration of the output: José Angel Oropeza, Director if IOM Italy, and Giuliana Urso from LUISS Study Centre on Political and Social Analysis (LAPS).
The presentations were followed by a roundtable discussion aimed to emphasise the importance of a correct and appropriate communication on a complex issue such as migration, which involved academics from different disciplines: the public policies analyst Marzia Basili; the demographer Antonio Golini, expert in sustainable development and migration flows; the economic geographer Alfonso Giordano; Raffaele Marchetti, Lecturer in Theories of Globalization. Intercultural mediators with a migration background also provided their interesting personal and professional perspective from fieldwork: Ejaz Ahmad (Pakistan), Godwin Chukwu (Nigeria), Pilar Saravia (Peru), Nadia Neagu (Romania); Ribka Shibathu (Eritrea). Final conclusions were drawn by Dr. Ugo Melchionda from IOM Italy, member of the Glossary scientific committee. During the event, coordinated by Dr. Franco Pittau from the Italian NCP, copies of the Glossary have been disseminated.
